The registration process is called individual electoral registration.
- Everyone is responsible for registering themselves and updating if they move
- You need to provide a few more details to register - including your national insurance number and date of birth. This makes the electoral register more secure
- You are not automatically registered even if you pay Council Tax.
How do I register under the new system?
- Go online at Register to vote - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).
- Fill in your name, address, date of birth and a few other details. You will also need your national insurance number, which can be found on your national insurance card, or in official paperwork such as payslips, or letters about benefits or tax credits. Alternatively find a lost national insurance number at Find a lost National Insurance number - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
- Look out for a confirmation to say you are registered.
Reasons to register
- enables you to vote in an election
- obtain a mortgage or credit
- by law you must register
Special arrangements for registering to vote
- As a Crown servant or as a British Council employee
- If you live or work abroad
- If you are a student or you have two addresses
- If you are in the armed forces
- You have no fixed address
- You are a prisoner on remand
- Anonymously if you are in danger
After you have registered
- Completing a registration form does not automatically add you to the electoral register
- Your details will be checked and verified
- You will receive a letter confirming that you are registered or asking for more information
- You can find out when your name will appear on the register
