The Leader of Stafford Borough Council has led tributes to a former Mayor who passed away earlier this week.

The flag above the civic centre in Stafford is flying at half-mast following the death of Councillor Angela Loughran.

She passed away peacefully at her home on Monday (27 April).

Angela was elected as a councillor in 1997 and represented the Manor Ward in Stafford - chairing several committees during that time. She was made Mayor in 2013 with her husband, John, as her consort.

Leader of the council, Aidan Godfrey, described Angela as a “friend and colleague” who would be sadly missed.

“He said: “We will all miss her wise counsel and her deep knowledge of all things Stafford Borough Council, but most of all we’ll miss her kindness and helping hand.

“As a councillor for nearly 30 years she has helped many people in difficult circumstances. She also helped fellow councillors with her caring outlook and understanding of how things in local government work.

“She was a hardworking ward councillor, a very good chair and committee member, but most of all she was fair and stood up for what was right. She was one of those unique people who everyone can relate to and respect.”

He added: “We all have her husband John and the rest of her family in our thoughts at this sad time.”

The civic flag will remain at half-mast until after the funeral.
