Thelonius "Monk" Ellison is a literature professor and novelist whose highbrow fiction works sell poorly. Angered by the accusation that his writing ignores 'the African-American experience', Monk pseudonymously pens a stereotypical 'Black' novel which gains widespread acclaim.
