Date: 14 Mar, 2017

5326_Runners_get_set_for_half_marathonHundreds of people are expected to line the route when a record 4,000 runners hit the streets of Stafford for the annual half marathon.

The Stafford Half has increased in popularity over the years and the Borough Council-run event taking place this Sunday (19 March) is the biggest yet.

Organisers increased capacity by an extra 500 spaces this year and all places sold out in weeks.

Crowds, including local community groups and charities are expected to line the 13.1 mile route to cheer on the runners.

Councillor Mike Smith, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: “The Stafford Half has gone from strength to strength and this year’s event is bigger than ever.

“It attracts runners from across the country and each year crowds turn out to support those taking part.”

The half marathon starts at 10am from Stafford Street in the town centre. Each participant will receive a medal along with a running t-shirt.

The Fun Run, which attracts hundreds of families and local organisations, will also take place in the town centre after the half marathon gets under way, at 10.10am.

The route, approximately a mile, consists of two laps around the town centre.

The fun run theme is Heroes and Heroines! And those taking part are encouraged to dress up as a favourite hero or heroine to run the race.
